Jerry Coffee is a retired Naval Captain and war hero from the Vietnam era who announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate on the Republican ticket for this fall. He will be going up against one of the Democrats who will be locked in a fierce primary battle - U.S. Rep. Ed Case or current U.S. Senator Dan Akaka. Mr. Coffee announced his candidacy at the Vietnam Memorial located near the Hawaii State Capitol grounds.

Since this article was posted, things have happened. Candidate Jerry Coffee had to pull out of the race in late August after undergoing heart by-pass surgery. It was too late at that time for the Office of Elections to pull his name off the primary election ballot. As a result, he still garnered the most votes in the Republican primary on September 23. As a result, the Hawaii Republican Party had the right to replace Mr. Coffee. To that effect the party named State Representative Cynthia Thielen as their candidate for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Senator Dan Akaka (who won his primary against challenger Ed Case).
