Pictures From the Auto Show

The annual Motor Trend First Hawaiian International Auto Show was held in Honolulu this past weekend (March 26 - 28) at the Hawaii State Convention Center. Dozens of new cars from various dealers and manufacturers were on display for the public to see, touch, sit in, compare prices and photograph delighted the thousands of people who attended the event. In addition to the current models, several classic and custom car clubs had their wares on display including vintage Ford Mustangs, Chevy Camaros, Volkswagens and cars from many years ago.

Emphasis this year was on promoting the "green agenda" with a number of alternative fuel cars. The usual hybrids (gas and electric models) such as the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius are readily available. Experimental fare included all electric cars such as a Prius on display by Hawaiian Electric, an all electric Mini Cooper and a hydrogen powered fuel cell SUV from The Gas Company. The Tesla Roadster which comes in a $100,000 a pop is an electric car that was also on display.

I am not crazy about the so called "green cars" as all current models cost significantly more than conventional and more plentiful gasoline powered vehicles.

Speaking of expensive, the exotic car corner that usually features Ferraris and Lamborgins were there with the highlight being a $1.4 million Masseratti M12 roadster. It's not a very practical car but it certainly would turn eyes if the owner used it as a daily driver. I wonder how large his insurance premiums are.

Lastly several brands of cars were not on display this year. They included Hummer, Saturn, and Pontiac, three brands that met their demise by the end of 2009 after General Motors declared bankruptcy and took a huge government handout financed by you and I, the taxpayers. A similar fate also befell Chrysler Corporation, who by 2009 did not shed many divisions since Plymouth had fallen a few years before. They however were acquired by Italy's Fiat corporation and may someday soon refocus to smaller, tinny vehicles (well known to European consumers who buy Fiats). Also noticeably absent were Volvo, Cadillac and for some reason BMW, though I may have simply missed their display.

Overall, a good time was had by all for anyone who showed up at the Auto Show.

$1.4 Million.... Yes.

This car cost $1.4 million.

2010 Subaru Forester

Of the several smaller SUVs I saw, this one was the best for me. It is the roomy 2010 Subaru Forester. Pricing is reasonable if I wanted to commit to buying one. At the low end this vehicle sells for $20,000 and the high end is more than $26,000. This one was at around $22,000. Below is the roomy interior shot of the Forester.

No GE Tax Increase!

Tax Increase Spokesman

NO NEW TAXES!

HB 2877 was gutted in the Senate after it passed over from the House. This nasty bill supported by Democrat legislators will increase the general excise tax by at least 25%! If it is passed, Honolulu residents will be paying up to 5.5% GET on all products and services.

Various liberal and social activist groups are supporting the tax increase while Tea Party conservatives are strongly opposed to this and all other tax increases.

Hawaii taxpayers cannot afford any new taxes since the economy is still in the toilet.

Photos: (Top) Former State Representative Alex Santiago is one of hundreds of liberal tax and spenders who support the increase to the State's General Excise Tax. The Hawaii State Government Employees Association (HGEA) union also support the tax increase (below). These two ladies from the union wear T-Shirts that proclaim that they are the "voice of the people"... maybe those few people who want to dish out more of their hard earned money to pay more taxes... they are NOT my voice!

Not My Voice

Check out this video. Tea Party taxpayers sign wave and comment against the GET increase. Video from Tom Berg and Hawaii Republican House of Representatives.

Anyone who is against tax increases must attend the April 15 Tea Party rallies that are being held throughout the islands. The Honolulu Tea Party takes place at the State Capitol on April 15 from 4 to 7 pm. More information at OvertaxedHawaii.com.

Honokaa Sewer Line Project

Honokaa Sewer Project

Driving through Honokaa town is like going through an obstacle course these days as work commenced on a federally mandated sewer line project. The main street running through the heart of the business district is being torn up to install sewer pipes that will replace old large capacity cesspools that have been in use for many decades.

The project has not only disrupted traffic flow, but also negatively impacted businesses in town. Some businesses may not outlast the project's timeline. Completion of the sewer line is slated for sometime next year.

A meeting was recently held to speed up one phase of the project on Pakalana Street that runs through the school area.

The cost for the sewer line is $5.3 million. The hook up fee for residents along the project line is at least $10,000 per home. I suspect the cost is higher for businesses.

The line will end up down in Haina near the power generation plant where it will be hooked up to a sewage processing facility.

Honokaa Sewer Project

This part of the project from Ted's Garage and Bank of Hawaii to the intersection near the Post Office and T. Kaneshire Store seems to be near or already completed. The construction area has been paved over. I have seen other projects in Honolulu where the pavement is ripped up again after initially covering it up. At the time these photos were taken (on March 18) the major area of digging was near Blaine's Drive In.

GE Tax Increase Looming

No New Taxes!

Two Senate Committees gutted a tax bill and replaced its contents with language that will increase the general excise tax by up to 25%. HB 2877 is the bill that the Senate Committees on Consumer Protection and Econmic Development and Technology decided to use as a vehicle for this heinous tax increase.

The following Senators voted to increase the general excise tax:

Consumer Protection Committee: Senator Baker, Senator Ige, Senator Espero, Senator Ihara, Senator Sakamoto and Senator Green (WR).

Economic Development & Technology Committee: Senator Fukunaga, Senator Baker, Senator Ige

Hawaii taxpayers should not be paying more taxes. We are in an economic slump as is. Hawaii is also one of the highest taxed states in the union. We cannot afford to keep paying more.
