Not too many people showed up for this far left rally yesterday (August 28) sponsored by Move On Hawaii. This was part of a celebration of Martin Luther King's 50th anniversary of the "I Have a Drream" speech, which also turned into a Gay marriage call. Proponents of Same Sex Marraige are trying to force the State Legislature into special session to enact a "marriage equality" bill.
Special sessions of the legislature are usually called for emergency purposes. Same Sex Marriage legislation is not an emergency. Wait until the start of the regular session which begins in January 2014. Let this kind of legislation go through the normal process during a regular session when there is more time for both sides to comment on the issue.
Frankly what should be done is introduce a new constitutional amendment that define marriage as a union between a "man and a woman" and nothing less. Also in this case, leave the legislature out of such statute.
Hawaii currently has a marriage definition clause in the State Constitution. The problem with our current law is that it give the legislature the power over the issue:
"The legislature shall have the power to reserve marriage to opposite-sex couples." (Article I, section 23)
Just say "No" to a special session for "same sex marriage".
