The 6¢ bottle tax increased by another 1/2¢ this weekend after the State Dept. of Health decided to exercise the pricing option over the summer. September 1 was the day this increase kicked in. Another half cent will impact consumers and businesses in a negative way over the long run. The bottle tax is not a good idea since consumers only get 5 cents back for every 6 and 1/2 cents they pay for each container. The state scrapes the 1-1/2¢ tax to use to run the container redemption program.
As far as I know, there is nowhere in the U.S. that the government administers a beverage recycling program.
The container tax has been in effect since late 2004.
